The cage of frills, broken by a celestial spirit of salvation. There comes a moment when we stop falling. It is our burdens that fall in our place. The fabrics slip away. Appearances recede.Cloud after cloud, the sky clears, leaving room for freedom.

Oil painting on stretched canvas, 120 x 40 cm. 2022.

Délestage

" There are storms that stir neither sea nor sky. They are born deep within us, invisible and silent, until one day they carry away our certainties like autumn leaves. Then comes the moment of surrender. The body no longer struggles. It yields to the current. Hair becomes a flowing tide, colours dissolve into one another, and the world begins to turn without meeting resistance. The maelstrom is no longer a threat. It becomes a transformation. There are storms we do not emerge from unscathed. We emerge from them changed."

Oil on linen canvas - 92x73 cm - 2024.

Maelström

The Relax series captures quiet moments of rest and surrender—where the body unwinds and the mind steps away from the noise. Reclining, seated, reflective—the figures appear caught in a gentle pause.Isabel Mahe uses natural poses, soft textures, and soothing palettes to express ease and release.

" Each painting invites us to slow down, breathe, and simply be."

As the sun sinks toward the horizon, the garments cease to be mere laundry. They become veils, lace blossoms, fragments of light suspended between earth and sky. This is the hour when the visitors arrive. Three squirrels leap lightly from line to line with the effortless grace of creatures untouched by notions of modesty or possession. They wander through this airy garden as though it were a forest in bloom, taking nothing with them but the joy of movement. In the softness of evening, the intimate is offered to the breeze with a sense of innocence rediscovered. Dresses, corsets and delicate lace no longer speak of those who once wore them; instead, they become the language of a quiet freedom, one that only twilight can reveal. Night slowly falls. The visitors disappear. All that remains is the whisper of the wind through the fabric, as though it alone remembers the secret of their passing.

Oil painting on stretched canvas, 120 x 40 cm. 2022.

Visitors at dusk

Isabel Mahe’s Portrait series highlights the intimacy of a gaze, the uniqueness of a face, and the trace of emotion left in a fleeting moment. Each piece captures something fragile, vibrant, and sincere. Through subtle contrasts, delicate textures, and expressive color choices, Mahé explores the inner lives of her subjects. It’s not just about portraying a likeness—but revealing a presence, a vulnerability, a quiet spark.

" These portraits speak through silence."

Isabel Mahe captures everyday scenes infused with subtle emotion and layered storytelling. Her subjects—often women in reflective or intimate moments—are portrayed with expressive brushwork and rich, contrasting tones.Through the use of overlapping textures and translucent color fields, Mahe invites viewers to look beyond the surface. These pieces blend the figurative with the abstract, revealing not just an external gesture, but a glimpse into inner worlds.<- L'âme des éléphantsOil on hardboard 160 x 60 cm - 2026

The Genre series

Nothing is hurried anymore. The wind no longer dries them.It cradles them.Somehow, the garments have found their brightness again. No trace of weariness.Gone, the day's tensions, the day's foam. What remains is the imprint of the one who wore them.

Oil painting on stretched canvas. 120 x 40 cm. 2022.

What the wind carries awaywas perhaps no longer ours to carrySometimes, all it takes is a breathfor what we thought indispensable to drift away, and for the essential to appear. The wind takes nothing. It reveals what was already free.

Oil on linen canvas - 61x50 cm - 2025.

Carried by the Wind

We do not always follow the light.Sometimes, it is the light that finds us.And we know, without understanding, that we are, already, on our way.

Oil on plywood - 120 x 60 cm - 2025.

Fascination

The prayers need no words. They are born of a breath,a presence,a light.Sometimes, all it takesis to surrenderfor the lightto find its way.It does not answer our calls. It answers our openness.

Oil painting on linen canvas mounted on hardboard panel fixed on a frame. 92x73 cm - 2025.

Incantation

Some lights reveal nothing. They simply make us more alive.Sometimes, all it takes is to open our eyes. And sometimes, to close them and welcome all the light.

Oil painting on hardboard panel, fixed on a wooden frame. Ready to hang without frame. The edges are painted sienna color (thickness 4 cm).

80 x 80 cm. 2025.

Full Sun

Sometimes the wind already knows our name. Then we stop resisting it.Our gestures grow lighter. Our thoughts loosen their grip. They simply move through the body.Like a breath. Like a flash of light. Like a dance no one is watching. Then movement becomes trust. And the body rediscovers the freedom it had never lost.

Oil on linen canvas - 55x46 cm - 2025.

Whirl

The light comes from above. Not to judge. Not to rule.It simply falls, letting itself descend, unaware of its own strength.Yet its vitality is such that it intimidates even the darkness.

Oil on linen canvas - 73x54 cm - 2025.

Zenith

A sun without warmth hovers above me,and below me, night covers the earth. But deep beneath the waters, light knows where to find us.De profundis clamavi.

Oil on linen canvas - 81x54 cm - 2023.

De profundis clamavi

Some moments do not know they are happy. They run, they splash, they laugh. And only much later does the heart understand what it was living.

Oil painting on stretched linen canvas - 73x54 cm - 2023.

Les feuilles mortes

Sometimes,it is enoughto let ourselves be carried.Like water.Like light.

Oil painting on linen canvas stretched on a frame - 40x80 cm - 2024.

Living Water

Listen. The forest is singing. It whispers, murmurs, growls and grumbles;at times it hums, at times it purrs, resonates,or rings like distant bells. It lets us hear the wind breathing through the leavesand discern the songs of the birds that dwell within it.But if we linger until nightfall,we find ourselves listening more intently, waiting for the hoot of a nocturnal owl or the haunting howlof some wandering wolf.

Oil painting on canvas - 92x73 cm - 2023.

Forest Song

The giant will never move.Yet something is coming to meet him.A hand.A glance.Five centuries have not been enough to cool the marble.Masterpieces do not live because they endure through time. They live because we continue to touch them—with our eyes... or with our hearts.

Oil painting on linen canvas, 92 x 65 cm. 2023.

The Giant Marble

What do we find at the end of the road?We journey through life, our eyes veiled by illusion. By illusions. In the night, we search for the light.Sometimes a glimmer blossoms close beside us, settles, fragile as a butterfly, within reach of our hand, within reach of our sight. If we pay it no heed, it slowly fades with time, until it dies away in the darkness of indifference.

Oil painting on linen canvas - 61 x 50 cm. 2024.

Journey to the end of the night

We never see a whole life.Only a window open onto a moment.A living moment, offered by life, without warning.Inside, light, warmth, and the soft, elusive curves quietly prevail.Outside, the cold night traces straight lines, spare and austere.

Oil painting on wood - 113x48,5 cm - 2024.

La chatte à la voisine

A window is made to reveal what is happening on the other side. That is why it is transparent.Curtains may be added, wrought iron may reinforce it, yet one can still see through. One is allowed to look, with the utmost discretion.

The wooden frame, a real window, with its fine metal bars, glass and hinges, gives a very realistic look to the painting.

Panel dimensions without frame: 61 x 38 x 0.2 cm. Through the window

Some presences remain behind a window. Not because they are hiding. But because a life can never be entirely seen. Some windows are not meant to be looked through. They are there to remind us that there is always an unseen part.Between the two, a pane of glass.Transparent.Yet never entirely crossed.

Oil painting on linen canvas. 81 x 65 cm. 2023.

They shared the same childhood games, the same friends, the same schools.Partners in mischief, they sometimes plotted without anyone knowing. They still laugh about it.They confided in each other the stirrings of their first loves. They comforted one another through small heartaches and great sorrows. The tears dried long ago. They quarrelled, apologised, forgave. They did not follow the same paths. They drifted towards different tomorrows, before returning. They nurture secrets no one will ever know. When they meet again, they see the face of their youth once more. And they share what no one else can ever reach.Memories.

Oil painting on canvas mounted on hardboard on a frame., 92 x 73 cm. 2026.

Montmartre Stairs

The sumo wrestler and the cat have some remarkable traits in common.Their talent for balancing is legendary, as is their tactical intelligence.Faster than a snake, and endowed with the precision of an eagle, they give their opponent no chance. Their lightning-fast attacks are explosive. As for their flexibility — need we even mention it? — it is proverbial. We marvel at the grace of their movements. However, if we value our dignity, we would be wise not to tickle them when it isn't cuddle time. That said, these natural feline abilities do not come naturally to the Japanese wrestler. It will take a human years of training, discipline, self-mastery to attain such perfection. And yet, there is one quality in which the tomcat could never equal the sumo wrestler: humility.

Oil painting on plywood board. 57 x 57 x 0.5 cm. 2024.

Frame repainted matt black.

Sumo Cat

Before the sacred mountain, time slows. The giant challenges nothing. He carries. Nestled upon his shoulders lies a woman, light as a breath, surrendered to the trust of the sky. In that moment, strength no longer seeks to conquer; it becomes balance. Mount Fuji remains still. For centuries, it has watched the passing of the seasons,of men, of their struggles, of their dreams. Perhaps it knows that true strength liesnot in what we are able to lift, but in the gentleness with which we choose to carry it.

Oil painting on MDF panel (3 mm) fixed on wooden frame. 1 x 1 m - 2023.

Ballad to Mount Fuji

A Japanese saying suggests that, when one is overwhelmed with work, one should “ask a cat for a helping hand.”Fair enough. One can always hope. The Japanese know that all too well.It is not the feline’s role to “lend a hand.” Whatever next? His purpose is simply to exist. To lounge in the warmth, waiting.Waiting for what? An opportunity? The right moment? Harmony. He has an acute sense of balance.Only the sumo wrestler can provide a counterweight, provided the balance beam is properly adjusted.

Oil painting on linen canvas mounted on wood panel. 50 x 40 x 0.8 cm. 2024.

Matching frame.

Fugue

Rumba is not samba, nor tango, nor even cha-cha-cha. One should not get them confused.Samba is a celebration in Rio, while tango strikes a pose, intense and dramatic. As for cha-cha-cha, it is playful and lively. But rumba… Rumba… The dance of Love with a capital L.Sensual, it teases, provokes and sways its hips.It shoots knowing glances that would make Cupid’s arrows jealous.Eyes size each other up, bodies challenge one another in an elegant game of seduction. They pretend to confront each other before melting into one.So make no mistake. This is rumba.

Oil painting on linen canvas.

61 x 50 cm. 2022.

To leave. To resign. Sometimes, we long to head for the open sea.To escape to other places, distant lands, to run away. For a new world.But.Is there a better world?

Oil painting on MDF panel - 55 x 38 cm - 2023.

We sometimes build impenetrable shelters.Certainties. Ramparts. Some journeys begin long before departure. They are born in a glance, in the hint of a smile, in that quiet curiosity that urges us beyond the horizon. Beneath her conical hat, she carries a little of Vietnam with her, as one carries the memory of a new light. The mountains fade into the mist, yet their presence lingers, suspended between sky and memory. Travel is not merely about discovering new landscapes. It is a quiet conversation with the world. It allows every country to leave within us a new colour, a silence, a different way of seeing life. And every homecoming already holds the promise of another departure.

Oil painting on linen canvas 73 x 60 cm. 2025.

There are more paths before us than we ever imagine. We fold them, one by one, with our hopes, our hesitations, and our memories. Though the paper boats remain still, the journey has already begun. " Self-taught by choice as much as by temperament,I have built my artistic world beyond the boundaries of formal training, guided by curiosity, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to my own work.My paintings are less about depicting reality than revealing its inner echoes.Light, colour, curves, and the feminine presence lie at the heart of my work.More recently, each painting has been accompanied by a poem—not to explain it, but to give it another voice.Painting and writing then enter into a quiet dialogue, inviting each viewer to discover a story of their own."
Biography

Isabel Mahe (b. 1963) is a French self-taught contemporary painter based in France.
Her figurative practice focuses on the female figure and explores emotion, vulnerability, sensuality, freedom and inner strength through light and colour.Since 2004, her work has been presented in group and solo exhibitions in France.
